What happened to my knee?

Last time, the story of operation was uploaded.

This article is that until operation of sequence of events.

The contents are “When I feel pain?”, “How much pain I had?”, and “What kind of process to operation?”

Chronological order to operation

I loved sports and played many kinds of sports. Karate, Track & Field, Swimming, Golf, Futsal(Indoor 5-man football), bouldering, and so on.

I had been focusing on Karate and Track & Field in my life. So these sports are main story in this time.

When I was in elementary school

I started Karate when I was 9. That is my turning point.

I loved playing sports when I was child. Basketball, swimming…and so on.

However karate was main sports for me through 6 years in elementary school.

My mother allowed to join karate club when I said I wanted to do karate. In the dojo, training was once a week.

No problem for my knee when I was elementary school student. I totally did not care about pain so I was willing to run and training in my daily life.

When I was in junior high school

I started to join track and field club in my junior high school and continue to run in club in school until graduating high school.

And, I stopped doing Karate when I was 13 years old.

At first, my athletic event was 100m when I joined the club. But my teacher recommended me to change to long distance event. From that, I was 800m and 1500m player.

Trainings were every morning and after school. In the weekend, many competition was held in-season.

Since I started track and field, I had injury. However, that was not only knee but also calf pain and shin splints.

What kind of strange of knee in this period?

From junior high school I felt something wrong. However, I was just amused the symptom.

That was that when I bent and stretched my left knee, it made a sound. (I don’t know how to explain the sound in English…)

In retrospect, I wonder my meniscus was already broken.

What treatment for this injury in this time?

Actually, no treatment at that time. The reason why I did not feel pain so much.

I went to an orthopedic clinic in my hometown but the treatment was not for knee, just the parts which I feel pain.

Of course, I thought the sound is not usual but did not care about it so much.

When I was in high school

Everyday, I ran in the track and field club in high school. At that time, my athletic event was race walk in addition to 800m and 1500m.

No morning training but everyday training after school and competition on weekend. (Of course, we had holiday so it was not impossible schedule for training.)

What kind of strange of knee in this period?

In high school, I had a pain for knee. The problem was not in bending and stretching. When I ran, felt pain.

Taking break was necessary. But sometimes I ran too hard not to fall behind.

What treatment for this injury in this time?

After training and when I stopped running temporary, I used ice pack and start to go to an orthopedic surgeon after school.

The docor said if you did not have a pain for knee, the sound would be OK. So I did not care about the strange sound so much.

I had an X-ray but did not have MRI(Magnetic Resonance Imaging) and CT scan(computed tomography scan). If the doctor asked me that “Do you want to have MRI and CT?”, I wonder I might know the condition of my knee.

When I was in university

I restarted Karate again from university instead of track and field.

I practiced in the dojo that I went to and joined the Karate club in university.

The time was that I put effort into Karate the most in my life.

What kind of strange of knee in this period?

I could do a training menu in the club, and a hard training in a training camp.

However, depending on the way of using my knee, I could not some technique. (For example, landing after jump with spin, Sokutou kick(kicking by outside of foot),and so on)

In long time training, it also caused strong pain for knee.

What treatment for this injury in this time?

I went to an orthopedic surgeon to have rehabilitation, taped and used athletic supporter before training and competition.

After training, the pain was getting better so I could join the next training.

After graduating the university

I continued to practice Katate once a week. When I was in Australia on working holiday I did it once a week. After come back to Japan, the training was also once a week.

This is the time I tried marathon, golf, and futsal.

How was the pain?

I already knew that when I felt the pain of knee so I practiced as much as possible.

However, the training was not so hard than in university so the pain was getting better and I could practice again.

What treatment for this injury in this time?

I didn’t go to hospital and no athletic supporter in the training.

Just before the operation

24th January: The doctor said same result as first doctor and I decided to take operation

After that: Prepared for operation (took a blood test, check my lung capacity had expra for the operation.

12th February: The operation was held

Conclusion

That was my process for the operation.

By writing, this is good opportunity for looking back my sports history.

I hope to do sports again so I will do my best for rehabilitation.

See you!!
